Ayton Castle

Ayton Castle

Repairs and consolidation to the remains of Ayton Castle - mediaeval masonry dating from the late fourteenth century.  It is listed Grade I and it, and its immediate environs, are a Scheduled Monument.  Today, little remains of the upper levels and nothing remains of the roof, however a number of interesting and important features survive.  The tower is surrounded by a complex of well preserved earthworks. The works have been undertaken on behalf of Scarborough Borough Council with grant assistance from English Heritage.  David was project architect for the first phase of repair in 2006 and was pleased to oversee the second phase too.  Work included masonry repairs and consolidation and replacement of existing metal door and window grilles.
